A little history . . .
George Gaines repaired wrist watches during the
Depression. He kept the
repair jobs in an old cigar box that he carried with him when he rode his bicycle
home at night. Pop was the front man. He never met anyone that he couldn't talk
to and be friends with. In future years as the business grew Mr. Gaines would
walk the streets downtown seeing how all the other shopkeepers and customers
were doing, and of course visiting at the same time. The "mayor" of Tennessee Avenue loved people almost as much as he
loved fixing things. Pop passed away on Valentine's Day 1986.
Doris Gaines was the business person. She
elevated George L. Gaines Jeweler, using a strong business savvy and the good
taste of a Southern Lady, to its status today as a guild store. Mrs. Gaines added
the best giftware the world has to offer. Jewelry from the finest designers
widened Gaines' inventory further. Darcie is retired now. Her physical health has betrayed
her, but at 91 her memory is as sharp as ever.
The business continues to be family run. Suzanne
Gaines manages George L. Gaines with a flair for the tradition begun years ago by George and Doris.
Dick Gaines is here doing his computer thing, building this website and keeping the business up-to-date in the 21st
Century.
Call, email or do it the old-fashion way - stop in and visit. Gaines still
offers the personal service and attention to detail we have since 1935.

At Gaines our customers are our neighbors. We
have third and fourth
generation clientele visiting our store now as our family continues experiencing
life's journey with you.
